my random thoughts

On my way downtown this morning, I helped out an elderly lady who seemed to have completely lost her way.  Apparently she lives near High Park, was on her way to Chinatown, but somehow ended up getting on the southbound train at Davisville station (?!).  She was in her seventies, but still very cognizant of her surroundings. On top ofthat, she didn't speak a word of English (she was most likely a newimmigrant).  She walked up to the man who sat next to me and asked him if he spoke (Mandarin) Chinese.  Luckily he did.  You should've seen her expression.  It was joy and relief all mashed into one.  Unfortunate for her, he (apparently) didn't know how to go to chinatown using the TTC.  I decided to step in.  With my seriously bad mandarin, I offered my assistance to her since I was going in that general direction.  I guided her to the proper subway station and onto the street car.  Luckily she recognized where she should be headed as the streetcar reached the College/Spadina interestion.  Good for me, because that was my stop.  I had planned to take her right to the address that she wanted to go to walk back to school.  Luckily I didn't have to do that.  So it ended up only being a 15 min. detour, but worth it.  Why?  Because I totally made her day and she was happy that I was there to help.  It's hard enough to be in a foreign land and not able to speak or read the local language.  It's even worse to become lost and not know which direction to go!
