Tuesday, September 30, 2003 The Vegas/LA trip has been started. Got a decent deal at the tropism in Vegas for $50/night plus tax, and the Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica for $70/night. I hope things go well! The cost of the van rental might be the bitchy part. I'm guessing it's going to be around $340 after all fees and taxes. On top of that there's gas money. But I guess dividing the cost 6 ways is good...That's assuming Mr. Chris is coming along. I know you read this bloc...So YOU BETTER COME! posted by Ben | | | 1:09 AM Sunday, September 28, 2003 Ebay certainly does sell everything: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4619&item=3626767629 posted by Ben | | | 11:45 PM Part 2 of my Fascination with South Central LA: http://lewis.sppsr.ucla.edu/research/workingpapers/06part1.pdf This Tuesday is rehearsal #1 for SSO. I'm beginning to be a little apprehensive about going bacause those Stanford kids are probably all kick-ass musicians. On top of that I really don't practice that much anymore, althought I should be. I hope I don't mess up. Northern Cali is getting cold, and that really sucks. My advice to anyone reading this blog: move to SO-CAL! posted by Ben | | | 1:44 PM Saturday, September 27, 2003 From that Summer Girls song by LFO (?)"I like girls who wear Abercrombie and Fitch, Chinese food makes me sick"....something something something To be honest, Abercrombie and Fitch has really really wrinkly clothes. Although they're in this "vintage" phase, wrinkly clothes is just not acceptable. If I want wrinkly clothes, I'd take clothes out of my hamper and wear it. Other than going to AF today, I did nothing else but read read and read. While reading Popular Science Stumbled across an interesting article (Oct 2002 issue)about "ultrasonic sounds". Isn't that an oxymoron, like Jumbo Shrimp? Anyways I don't completely understand it but the concept seems cool. It looks like there's an "unofficial" Russian Actel site: http://www.actel.ru posted by Ben | | | 10:34 PM Friday, September 26, 2003 The longer I stare at this computer monitor the more cross-eyed I become. But hey, it's Friday, so I don't really care anymore about work. I'm once again getting that constant sleepy feeling that is oh so reminiscent of school. This sucks, because I don't even go to school! Note to self: go to sleep earlier! Earlier this afternoon, I had an interesting discussion with a friend from LA. I told him that I wanted to take the LA Metro to Compton station, go out and take a picture somewhere with the word "COMPTON" written on it. Then he tells me "Ben, you are so fucked". Am I really that screwed up? Maybe. But now I have this bizarre fascination with Compton. With that In mind, I found an interesting page which talks about Compton, from a "brotha" himself: go here posted by Ben | | | 9:37 PM GOOD NEWS ^^^^^^^^ Stanford orchestra supposedly accepted me. I don't' know where I'll be sitting though, but I'm sure it'll be in the back because, hey, it's Stanford we're talking about here. I was checking out the latest and greatest in Canadian Cell phone offerings, and came across this Danger HipTop thing. Looks hella cool. Go there The company, Danger Inc., is located right down the (Big) freeway in Palo Alto, right On University Avenue. Its literally steps away from Stanford. Hmm The company was probably opened by a Stanford grad. Those dudes have all the money and influence to get startups up and running. SO C. Yip is off to the T-dot. I wonder what the weather is like there. It should be getting cold by now! I really want to go back, but my mom is coming down so there really is no point. Gotta wait till Christmas. posted by Ben | | | 1:26 AM Wednesday, September 24, 2003 wow opera was AMAAAGING. I was particularly impressed by the set and production design. It's totally worth going, especially when its free. Everybody should get a dose of culture from time to time. .::Site of the day::. "The credit card prank" http://www.zug.com/pranks/credit/ posted by Ben | | | 10:41 PM Tonight is Big Night #2. It's big because almost all of the intern boys and girls will be hittin' up the big city to see Mozart's One-eyed snake! Opps...I mean, Magic Flute. Apparently this is gonna be some glamourous production with crazy props and sets, just like the ones on PBS. I'm excited. It gets me even more excited when the seats that we got for free are worth $140 a piece. Nice one, Ronald Chase! FYI, Bight Night #1 is Stanford audition night. posted by Ben | | | 3:27 PM How extreme can a guy go to impress his chick? Well he can go quite far. Take for example my good friend Chris. I would think that he's every girls' fantasy bf. Damn I wish I was a girl....ok, well not quite...but almost. Last week he dropped almost 2 Benjamins at Tiffany & Co. on a bracelet no questions asked. On top of that he will be hand-delivering it this weekend. He's on the phone with her every day for hours talking and constantly thinks of things to surprise her. I'm impressed. But that's not the point. What if the roles were reversed? Would the girlfriend get her boytoy something that is the male equivalent of a Tiffany bracelet? How would the dude take it? Hey hey, I can be the guinea pig :D .::PICTURES::. So this past Sunday, Me Chris Bribri had a grand tour of the home of the Infamous "RAM ME, Gorgeous". Here is the proof: This is his house I'm too lazy to post the rest of the pics. so I'll just link you to it. GRRR click here posted by Ben | | | 12:28 AM Monday, September 22, 2003 Does anyone know how to tie neck ties properly? Cuz I don't. Help! posted by Ben | | | 1:01 AM Nothing much went on today. Just same 'ole same 'ole. It was again to hot, and I took that as an excuse to not practice for the audition. (conscience says: Nice one, Ben! You're regret it later!) posted by Ben | | | 12:24 AM Sunday, September 21, 2003 Today's weather has been brought to us by HOT HOT HOT. Damn was it stuffy at home today. I can fry an egg on the floor. Almost. It's nice to be fully settled in, and to just bum around the house and go to the park and stuff like that. C Yip took pics of Rambot's house (his house is a van!), with me. bri bri and RAmbot in it. The pics should turned out pretty good. Had a mock Stanford Orchestra audition last night. I think it went okay, but I felt nervous even with friends around. Imagine how nervous I'd be when I'll be playing in front of a stranger on Thursday. It's too hot to practice, so I'll practice later. hahaha Stopped by Fry's (Toronto people: Fry's Electronics is a big electronics store chain down here in the Bay Area. It's like Future Shop on steroids)today to look for some mini 1/4 inch jack to RCA phono converters. I found them, but they were too short. rats. One good thing that came out of it was that I know that they sell 61GB harddrives (Maxtor ones) for $80 - ($30 mail in rebate) = 50 + taxes paid on the $80. That's a pretty sweet deal but I'm waving up money for an Ipod :D OH yea, while at Fry's, I flexxed my FOB powah and played a game of dance dance Revolution. Yup. they permanently have a PS2 set up to run that game! it was sooooo fun! FOB FOB FOB. posted by Ben | | | 10:40 PM Soulful House sessions on BBC 1Xtra hosted by Aaron Ross is just simply ear-candy. I think it's definitely worth a listen whenever anyone has time to kill. http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/ Missed Friday's blog. But that's okay, I'll just post it now. Scored another free lunch at work today. BOOYA. But it was Mexican food, so nothing special. Mexican food here is more authentic (read: tastier) than most Mexican places I've been to in Toronto so ... It's all good. Most of the co-ops went over to Natasha's for what was supposed to be a "sleep over party" after work. We all ended up going home though. It was fun nonetheless. BYOB parties are always da bomb, especially when I was able to find $1.99 Triple Sec and Peach Schnapps at the liquor store next to Safeway. For those in the know, it's next to the Safeway on Shoreline and Stierlin road. (94043 area of course ;)) The whole thing ended up to be a movie marathon. H. Chan brought his laptop with him and jacked it up to the TV. I was quite impressed because, to be honest, I've never seen someone hook up a computer to a TV before. Strange but true! We watched a few movies (these movies were in DivX format) that were on his machine, ALL IN ONE SITTING. Today: what did I do today? Gee I don't remember exactly. I knew I did grocery shopping and went to the mall in Santa Clara because Chris had to pick up his girlfriend's bracelet at Tiffany's (!!!!!!!!!). Yes. Tiffany's. Anyways that wasn't the cool part. The cool part was that we all decided to have dinner together. Naturally, I cooked . Luckily, they didn't die from food poisoning. The menu: soup with fuzzy melon things and baby corn in a chick broth base. Spicy garlic eggplant (Yu Xian egg plant?), with sauce provided by none other than Lee Kum Kee baybee! Steamed oysters with black bean sauce and minced garlic. I think I over cooked it but it was still good! Chris made Japanese style chicken curry. That was real good. I'm gonna try that sometime. Last was just a veg stirfry with black bean sauce. Everyone liked that one. WE were all quite happy after the meal. Then off to the hot tub at Oakwood with the full-timers. Life was good to me today. I hope it'll stay like that, atleast for the next year or two. Good company and good food is Heaven on Earth. posted by Ben | | | 2:58 AM Friday, September 19, 2003 Exactly one week before the big audition and one week before Miss P's birthday. There's so much going on! What the hell yo? I've decided to start Christmas shopping. Since i'm gonna have some money lying around this year, why not make my friends just that much happier with material goods? In fact...i can buy everybody Abercrombie stuff since they don't have AF stores in Canada! Booya. Ping pong after work today was so fun, but I seriosly have to improve my game otherwise I'll look like a loser when I play Nigel. I'm too tired to write. Gotta go into work at 7am tomrrow (Friday right? ) posted by Ben | | | 12:51 AM Thursday, September 18, 2003 Wow another fun filled day. To start off, going all the way to Stanford to sign up for the audition was a waste of time. The drive there was hell. First I got off at the wrong exit on the freeway (missed the Palo Alto/ university Ave exit on the 101). Then once I found my way back on University Ave, the traffic was denser than a Japanese apartment complex in Tokyo. It was friggin' nuts. Now here's the fun part: when I got to the Braun Music Center, the sign up sheet wasn't there. Great eh? Good news is that, I called up the lady in charge (she's also the conductor) and got myself an audition date. It's gonna be next Thursday (25th Sept), after work! Gotta practice harder! My department picked up the tab at dinner tonight. Went to this Italian joint called Don GIovanni's in Downtown Mountain View. There's a website somewhere for this place. Believe it or not, my roommate got home AFTER me. That's a first. I actually needed the car tonight to drive a friend back home, but couldn't find it cuz my roommate still had it! Luckily Bri Bri was nice enough to drive. .::PICTURES::. None today. Sorry. posted by Ben | | | 2:59 AM Wednesday, September 17, 2003 I've pain stakingly added a comments type tag board in the blue section....so...TAG IT! posted by Ben | | | 2:14 AM Yet another day at the work place, but with a twist. I finally met one of the engineers that I correspond with. There's some sort of Design Fest at work all week and all the field dudes are in the buildings doing "stuff". Finally forced myself to go to the gym. Don't know how long I can keep this up, but 3 times a week shouldn't be too hard. :/ Chris and Bri Bri gave me a ride up to Stanford tonight to look for this music building. Need to go there tomorrow to sign up for an audition. What can I say, they're decent people. Husband and wife material for sure HAHAHA! 2 of my favourite things: • Dollar Menu at Mc D's • Dollar Menu at Mc D's Too bad the MC D's at the Stanford mall doesn't have a Dollar Menu. Crap. Booked mom a ticket down to Frisco. She insisted on flying direct, which kinda sucks because the ticket was almost $200 more. At least the $200 was in Canadian dollars! Now I've to keep my room clean. Damn. .::PICTURES::. Since I am completely clueless when it comes to HTML authoring, I will leave it to my friends to provide *me* with web content. Click on the links below. I hope they open up to a new page. • A Picture of my apartment note that it is stolen from my roommate's site. SHHHH he doesn't know this. • A house in Monterey Beach. Although I don't live in that house, I thought I'd include it in here anyway. It could be mine someday. There's still a finite, non-zero probability that I might end up there. SUUURRRE... posted by Ben | | | 1:04 AM Tuesday, September 16, 2003 Jesus H. Christ. It's been exactly 3 months since I've posted to this blog. Lets just say that a lot has happend in 3 months. In a nutshell: got car, apartment, *credit card* (bling bling!!) AND FInally got those turntables! booya. Plus some nice wax to go with it. Bought them at Amoeba, too! That place rocks. Too bad not too many of the interns appreciate that place. Then again, they're not as into music as Simon and I. Also....will be auditioning for Stanford Orchestra, started the vocab for GRE exams. Plans for the next little while: • steal Chris' webspace for my pics. Better yet, just link to it. • find cheap airline tickets for mom • buy more vinyl New stuff added to the links page: 1. Chris's site http://www.ecf.utoronto.ca/~yipch/ I don't do HTML so copy and paste it into your browser. posted by Ben | | | 12:08 AM |
