Sunday, July 31, 2005 I saw another movie last night, at my parents' home, who happens to have a DVD player. I rented something called "Last Life in the Universe". Dialogue is in Japanese/Thai/English. Very interesting film because I got so confused with what actually happened and what didn't happen at the end. *really*. I definitely need to see it again to make sense of things -- sorta like Memento. Full of contrasts and similarities all over the place. There isn't much dialogue, but the action sometimes speaks louder than words I guess. Great photography in terms of othe way the scenes were framed. Then I rented Blade 3, the "extreme" edition to just test out how well the decoder handles DTS-ES 6.1. Dad doesn't even have a 6.1 set up. LOL. It was just mega friggin loud, and I could hear the rumbling all the way in the basement (the stereo is on top floor of the house). It wasn't from the sub woofer because I had that turned off. Really *bad* acting. I got it only because I don't pay for my rentals. posted by Ben | | | 8:53 AM Saturday, July 30, 2005 Dwele (pronounced 'dwell lay') rocked the house tonight. He played a one-hour set (free performance) of mostly unreleased tracks from his upcoming album (to be released in October) at Harbourfront tonight as part of the Spicy Food fest down there. His grooves are hot. Spicy hot. The crowd didn't appreciate the musical calibre of this man, perhaps he's not as well known here, yet. He's been on heavy rotation in the UK right now. I know because i listen to BBC radio all day long. He's also been play in a lot of underground sets as well. Great music. Well written, arranged and executed. Keep that name in mind, and when he blows up remember where you heard it first ;) posted by Ben | | | 12:54 AM I haven't had the chance to see the 3 movies i listed. Instead I saw the following: 1. Alfie -- Jude Law aka the guy that cheated on his fiance just weeks before his wedding with his house keeper who he later fired. Funny film. Remake of course. More of an "I told you so" sort of movie. Moral? Don't sleep around like a slut. What goes around comes around. 2. Hostage -- Bruce Willlis aka Die Hard guy. Man it sucked bad. It was a cross between unbreakable and one of his die Hard movies. Bad Plot. Bad character developemnt. Very unconvincing villains. Glad I didn't pay for the rental. In other news, some progress at work. We might actually get to verify the design soon. All those extra hours are finally somewhat paying off. Also....the abstract for the January conference in San Diego is due soon. SHit i need to discuss it over with my team about this. I have a feeling that the prof is only going to fly one of us down to SD. I hope we all ge to go....cuz SD is damn fun, esp tijuana on a weekend :D posted by Ben | | | 12:39 AM Wednesday, July 27, 2005 I took on a second job last weekend. Call me crazy but I need an escape from my normal job. I am once again a video store clerk, working 6 hours a week. The manager liked me so much when I used to work there she offered to take me back if I ever wanted to return -- and I did. To be honest, I did it for the perks. Mainly, the free rentals and other random discounts at various retail outlets. I borrowed a VCR from the store (it's on loan indefinitely hahaha) to wach the few rentals that are still being released on tape. DVD is the way to go for sure. I'm torn between a computer DVD reader or a stand-alone dvd player. Anyways, I've finally found something to occupy myself with when I've no where to go or nothing to do. Life is a lonely one when there are no roomies to talk to. I rented 3 movies so far: 1. Beaches -- Bette midler and Barbra Hershey. Straight up chick flick, but really sad. Guys, if you wanna have a good cry for whatever reason, this is the one to rent. 2. Kinsey -- Liam Neeson aka Jedi guy. Very good biopic about the man who changed the way we look at sexuality. I'm sure it's missing a lot of details, but the film is entertaining nonetheless. Warning though, a bit frontal male nudity and kissing. Cover your eyes if you can't stomach it. 3. Hotel Rwanda -- Don Cheadle aka the "Ladies Man" from SNL. I totally typed-casted him as the the corvoisier drinking man-whore from his NSL days. I did not expect him to do so well in a heavy dudty dram like Hotel Rwanda. Fantastic story (because it was based on true events) and very well told. They should show this movie in schools, to bring awareness to some of the horrible things that happened in Africa. Infact there should be more movies like this so that awareness can be brought out to the masses. I think i'm going to rent something lighter, on my list: 1. Team America 2. Sideways 3. Million Dollar Baby posted by Ben | | | 10:00 AM Thursday, July 21, 2005 No pictures this time, but I do have something to say. First is that, everyone in Toronto should go out to this weekend's Love My Chinatown campaign. Its a good cause, especially for those of you who shop there. It's time that we set a good example and clean up the place. A friend in psych told me that the best way to stop people from littering is to pick up litter in front of them. So do it! I've been getting compliments about the pictures I've taken! I think it's really nice of people to say that. Though they're all friends of mine, so I can't determine whether they mean it or not. One of them does have an arts background in graphics design. She told me I should collect my photos and sell 'em off as stock photography since my subject matter is so random. I just might do that...Anybody wanna buy some royalty-free stock photography? By the way they're posted online on Flickr. Lastly, this is really random, I've had my real player streaming BBC radio 1 for the last 60 hours straight. It finally died on me and I had to restart it. I'll see how long I can get it going this time. I'll even post some screen shots if I'm in the mood! posted by Ben | | | 11:51 AM Wednesday, July 13, 2005 Pictures from the Toronto Street Festival opening night, including giraffes and Broken Social Scene. posted by Ben | | | 10:09 AM Friday, July 08, 2005 As Promised, some Asian squat pictures. They were all taken in Beijing...the squatting capital! posted by Ben | | | 10:31 AM I have been employed officially for one month and 2 days. The job is going alright. I like the flexibility very much and people are nice. But there aren't a lot of people in my lab. It gets frustrating at times, especially waiting for simulations to finish. The boss just bought a new dual processor (at 1.5 GHz each) Sun Fire server with like 30gigs of ram for us to do our sims. It's still taking a long time. LOL. I feel like i'm married to it. I spend more time here at work than I do sleeping at home. Next time when I have free time, I think I'm going to post up my Asian squat pictures. What is the Asian squat you say? well you can find out here and watch the video. posted by Ben | | | 9:48 AM |
